Wicker furniture is beautiful and works with every type of decor. Most people know that keeping wicker furniture in good condition requires protecting it from the harsh conditions of winter weather. Protecting wicker in winter is just one component of taking care of your investment and many people do not know how to take wicker furniture out of winter storage. While it may seem that all one has to do is take the wicker furniture out and enjoy it when spring arrives, there are a few steps that need to be followed to make sure your wicker furniture lasts and looks great year after year.
Spring Clean Your Wicker Furniture
When it is time to take the wicker furniture out of winter storage, it is time to start spring cleaning. Be sure to work on the wicker on a warm, windy day so the drying process is speedier. Wicker does not tolerate long term exposure to moisture well and a warm and windy day will cut the drying time and help eliminate water damage.
The first step is to use the soft bristle brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner and give the wicker a thorough vacuuming. Next, using a nylon cleaning brush, scrub down the wicker with warm soapy water or Murphy’s Oil Soap. For tight spaces or areas that have a buildup of dirt or grime, a toothbrush or paint brush is a good choice for cleaning. Once the wicker has been cleaned, rinse away the cleaning solution by wiping it down with a clean rag that has been dipped in water and wrung out. Wipe the wicker with the damp cloth until the cleaning solution is completely removed.
Once the furniture is clean and rinsed, place it in the sun so it can dry. Be sure that no one sits on the wicker while it is wet. Sitting on wet wicker will stretch, warp, damage or even break the fibers. Be patient. It may take a couple days until the furniture is completely dry. Once the furniture is dry, take it out of the sun since prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can dry out the wicker too much and cause it to become brittle and easily broken.
Keep Wicker Supple With Oil
After the wicker has been cleaned and is thoroughly dry, wipe it down with lemon oil and a soft cloth. Lemon oil will impart the right kind of moisture to your wicker without darkening its finish. If you want the finish of the wicker a bit darker, simply apply a coat of boiled linseed oil combined with two times the amount of turpentine. Allow the linseed oil and turpentine mixture to soak in and wipe away any excess with a clean cloth. You can repeat this process until you get the desired level of darkness.
For long lasting protection, polyurethane or varnish can be applied to wicker furniture. Once every seven to ten years, apply a coat of varnish or polyurethane. This will provide lasting protection and a barrier against moisture. Simply apply a light coat of the sealant of your choice, allow it to dry completely, then enjoy your beautiful furniture.
With a little effort and attention, wicker furniture can give you years of use and beauty. Just as important as storing your wicker properly before winter hits, taking wicker out of winter storage the right way is crucial to its longevity. When spring arrives and thoughts of sitting in your wicker furniture enjoying the warm weather start to dance in your head, remember these tips. Take the necessary steps to insure your furniture is properly prepped and ready for spring so you can enjoy your furniture for many years to come.
